Our Technology

How We Put Technology to Work

  • Computers - Our office is equipped with two Windows computers. The Compaq Prosignia desktop has an 18 GB hard drive and a 19-in. monitor. The Sony VAIO laptop has an 40 GB hard drive and a 15-in. XGA screen.
  • Internet - We have a DSL broadband connection for communication over the Internet, and use CuteFTP for high speed file transfers.
  • Laser Printer - We use an HP LaserJet 2100M PostScript printer with 1200 dpi resolution and 12 MB of memory.
  • Software - For preparation of documents we can use FrameMaker ver. 6 and ver. 7, Microsoft Office (2003 and 97), and WordPerfect Office (ver. 9 and ver. 11).
For editing photos and bitmap illustrations we can use Corel PhotoPaint 12, Painter 8 and Corel Capture. For simple diagrams we use Visio 2003. For creation of line art illustrations and import of CAD drawing files, we use Corel Designer 12.
  • Image Scanner and OCR - To capture printed images and text, we use an HP 6200Cse flat bed scanner with 1200 dpi by 1200 dpi resolution. For OCR (optical character recognition) we use ScanSoft OmniPage Pro, ver. 15.
  • Digital Voice Recorder - We use a Sony ICD-MS1 digital recorder when collecting information through interviews. This recorder saves audio on a removable memory stick media, which allows copying the audio files to a computer hard disk. For later computer transcription of the audio to text we use a Sony FS-85 transcriber. For more about digital recorders, please refer to my recorder article (from the Summer 2001 issue of The PATCA Journal).
  • Voice Recognition - For rapid and accurate conversion of voice into text, we use Dragon Naturally Speaking ver. 7 (speech recognition software) and a high quality microphone.
  • Graphics Tablet - For precise editing of graphic files, we have a WACOM Graphire3 graphics tablet. An added bonus when using the table is reduced operator fatigue. We find moving the pen stylus over the tablet to be less tiring than manipulating a mouse over a flat surface.
  • Hand Scanner - For fast and convenient capture of sections of printed text (or small graphics), we use a WizCom InfoScan hand-held scanner. Captured text can be downloaded to a computer (via cable to a USB port) or beamed to a PDA for later synchronization with a computer.
  • Digital Pen - To automatically convert hand-written text into a computer text file, we use a Logitech io2 digital pen. When writing on paper, images of the handwriting are captured by a camera built into the pen and stored in on-board memory. Afterwards the image data are transferred to a computer (via cable to a USB port) and converted to a text file.
